Envisioning Yuan Ming Yuan
The worst architectural casualty of the British and French invasion of Beijing in 1860 was not the Summer Palace, but Yuan Ming Yuan, a royal garden and sanctuary more than 3 times the size of the Summer Palace. Yuan Ming Yuan was never restored; its ruins have been preserved much as they were left by the British as a national humiliation shrine. The closest we can come to experiencing the original grandeur of Yuan Ming Yuan is in the virtual world. The University of British Columbia's Media and Graphics Interdisciplinary Center, in cooperation with the Xing Xing Computer Graphics company, have developed a 3D virtual model of the royal garden viewable online. Highly recommended.
